Application procedure for MEXT

There are 2 ways to get the MEXT scholarship, university recommendation, and embassy recommendation.

1-University Recommendation

In this case, you have to apply to the relevant department in the university you like. The procedure is a little bit different in each website.

Here are some links in The University of Tokyo (as an example, try to find similar info from other universities too)

General link for MEXT scholarship

(not much details are available here as it is common website to the whole uni, have to check in each graduate school for more details)

Degree Programs Offered in English for Graduate Students

This has the all the courses you can do in The Tokyo

example course

This is engineering

again it depend on the department, above link have a link to the list of departments

Example department

civil engineering department  ( a most detailed website we have seen)

it gives the link to guidance (orange icon)

go to selection process and schedule if you need details about dates

so every year it is the same schedule

Likewise, check  other universities too and find their website and relative departments by yourself, make an excel sheet (Tip to find the good universities, search “top 10 universities in Japan” in google)

2-Embassy recommendation

1). In the embassy recommendation process, application period ends in May in the previous year to the intended scholarship year.  (e.g. If you are applying for 2018, application period is May 2017). Applications should be forwarded to the ministry of higher education since the initial selection is done by them.

2). After reviewing your application, selected candidates are requested to do a written exam.

  • English and Japanese Language (Japanese exam is optional for selection)

3). If you get through the written exam, next step is the interview.

  • Most important thing to pass the interview is the research plan. They check past achievements too. Also, they need to see how your research plan will benefit both Japan and Sri Lanka)

4). You need to pass above 2 steps to pass the ‘Preliminary Screening’ of the MEXT scholarship program. Once you pass the interview, a certificate is given saying that you have passed the preliminary screening and the set of application documents are given to be filled and given to the embassy of Japan.

5). Once you get the preliminary screening certificate, you need to write to the prospective supervisors get their acceptance to supervise your future studies by the ‘Acceptance Letter’.

6). Return the Acceptance letter to the embassy.

7). Once you complete all the above steps, all your application documents are sent to the MEXT in Japan for the secondary screening.

8). Secondary screening results will be announced by the February of the coming year and if you pass the secondary screening, you can fly to japan in the first week of April or October depending on your course plan.

  • Students may contact university professors before the interview too (some professors are okay with that)  and you may find some other opportunities ass well
  • Usually, students will not be directly enrolled in university MSc or Phd programs. They may have to join as research students and sit for entrance exams.

Hope above details will be important and if you need further information please have a look at following links.
